Design Ideas for Cozy, Neutral Christmas Decorating

Hi you guys! I’m so happy to be sharing our family room decorated for Christmas with you all today! I don’t often share this room, mostly because it is where my family spends the majority of our time and is rarely ever “photo worthy”, but I wanted to give you a few design ideas for some cozy, neutral Christmas decorating that would work in any home.

This is a space that we spend A LOT of time in, so it was important to me that the Christmas decor not be too overpowering. I wanted a soft, neutral palette that we could enjoy throughout the holiday season, without getting tired of it. I also wanted it to be super cozy and feel as though we could spend the day snuggled up with a good book by the fire.

I didn’t originally plan to have two trees in here, but I had an extra, slim 7’ tree from TARGET and figured I would see if I could make it work. I set the slimmer tree on a box slightly behind the fuller tree and ended up loving how it looked.

For the tree decorations, I decided to stick with creamy whites mixed with different sized pine cones.

I used frosted pinecones on floral picks and they were super easy to place all over the tree. I made sure they were tucked in so they looked as if they were growing naturally on the tree.

I also got larger stems with bunches of mini pinecones at my local Michael’s Store and placed them throughout the tree. This gave the trees a super neutral and natural look that I love.

I then added a creamy toned, wired ribbon and some matte and glossy white ornaments. Finally, I used a couple of chunky knit blankets wrapped around the bases as tree skirts. I think the overall look was really dramatic, but still neutral and warm.

Above the fireplace, I used a mixture of fresh cedar garland and faux, frosted garland to create a full look, but still keep the colors neutral. (I consider any greenery a neutral color) I also added a couple of small, faux pine trees in natural wood containers on one side of the hearth.

I tied a frosted wreath to the fireplace screen and stacked some birchwood logs inside the fireplace. With three kids and three dogs we need a lot of Christmas stockings around the fireplace, so I hung ours on the mantle and the pups on a rustic ladder leaning against the fireplace.

My absolute favorite stockings are these creamy, cable knit ones that I got last year. I love how they look against the darker stone of the fireplace and they are just so darn cozy.

A copper bucket filled with oversized pinecones is the perfect neutral accent by a simple linen chair or on the fireplace hearth.

As we make our way through the holiday season, we will spend many days and nights gathered together in this room with family and friends. I will enjoy the glow of our twin Christmas trees, the yummy softness of our chunky knit stockings and blankets and the warmth of a crackling fire.
